About the book

Yefim Grigoryevich Berezhnoy, head of the anti-banditry department, has a difficult case to investigate. Gleb Serebryakov, a successful and respected lawyer, has been killed in his apartment together with his wife. Before sending the couple to the next world, the criminals cruelly tortured their victims, burning their skin with cigarettes, stabbing them with something sharp, beating them. At the scene there was nothing that could point to the identity of the criminals. Only two aces lay on the table: the ace of diamonds and the ace of spades.

Investigator Berezhnoy is sure that the criminals came to this very apartment for a reason. After the war criminals burgled apartments all the time, but this case was special. The cards left by the criminals reminded Yefim of a gang that had robbed and killed people even before the war. The criminals always left two playing cards behind. The prewar raiders had been caught using jewels as bait. As it turned out, part of the jewels vanished somewhere during the gang's arrest. And not without the involvement of Serebryakov. Perhaps someone simply decided to take back what belongs to him, and that is why he came to the lawyer's apartment? To find out, read Evgeny Sukhov's historical detective novel “The Old Thief's Will”.
