About the book

Varyag would never have gone into government. It is against the code for a thief-in-law, the Overseer of Russia, to walk around as a state official. But he had to. The choice was small: either work as a secret agent for a former Chekist or rot on the prison bunk. Varyag is not scared of a prison camp, but he knows better than anyone what happens to those who know too much.

In the chair of a high-ranking official at the State Armaments Supply Agency the thief-in-law feels surprisingly comfortable: managing people is nothing new to him, and his wits work better than those of some bureaucrats. But someone clearly dislikes Varyag's new affairs: the Overseer's people are being killed by a hitman, and behind it all stands a man called Glukhar. The killer has come very close: it is time to leave the soft chair and find out what is going on...
