About the book

A great thieves' council declares a brutal war on the Overseer of Russia, the famous thief-in-law Varyag. Victim of a vile conspiracy, Varyag ends up in captivity, in a terrible underground solitary cell. Meanwhile the country's political elite is changing, and the newly minted “lawful” thieves who betrayed Varyag try to take advantage of it. They seek a secret deal with the new authorities, imposing a bloody redivision of spheres of influence on the underworld. At the cost of incredible effort Varyag breaks out of confinement, heals his wounds and, gathering a handful of his most loyal men, wins back in a harsh struggle the place that is his by right as an unquestioned authority, punishes the traitors and restores justice.
