About the book

In Petersburg the bankrupt company Baltic Merchant Fleet is put up for auction. Among the buyers are financial tycoons, bankers, and big and small businessmen. They are joined by the thief-in-law Chief, who has come from Moscow, sent to the northern capital by the Overseer of Russia, Varyag. The Moscow “lawmen” need their own shipping company to smuggle goods and transport drugs through the “window on Europe” past the state. But on the eve of the auction Chief is brutally killed. Then another bidder dies, and after him another. Cars explode in the city, shots ring out: someone is methodically removing everyone connected with the coming auction... Varyag sends Roman Filatov, nicknamed Filat, to Petersburg. He must take part in the auction at any cost, but first he must find the lawless killer behind the massacre and deal with him by the code...
