About the book

The director of a publishing house approached a successful writer with a proposal to reissue his book. The book came out in a large print run and enjoyed phenomenal success. The publisher suggests he create a series of books. In due time the writer brings a new book. A few days later the publisher calls and asks him to come. The writer arrives. The publisher offers him co-authorship of the book. The writer refuses. He wanted to take his book back, but he is persuaded to stay. A contract for a new book is signed. The writer eagerly awaits its publication. Soon it appears on the shelves. But to his surprise the book has been cut by half. And the imprint says that the so-called “literary editing” was done by that very publisher. The writer is outraged. He writes the publisher a letter saying he needs no “literary editing”, that he is a professional writer himself....

From 2000 to 2006 a paradoxical, tragicomic situation arose on the book market.

In that period two publishers were putting out books by Evgeny Sukhov at the same time. AST-Press issued books whose imprint said “a group of authors works under the pseudonym Evgeny Sukhov”, authors I truly have nothing to do with, while Eksmo published the books I wrote myself. As proof, my photograph was printed on the cover.

This situation completely confused all readers. Some said that Evgeny Sukhov is a pseudonym, others claimed that Evgeny Sukhov is a real writer.

To some extent I had to compete with the “pseudonym Evgeny Sukhov”. I did not want to write fewer books than AST-Press was turning out. And I tried with all my might! I can say it with some pride: I did not give way to them. I wrote practically as many as they did, as a whole team.

What a race that was!
