About the book

Vasily III, Grand Prince of all Rus, having waited in vain for an heir from his wife Solomonia, exiles his unloved spouse to a convent. The new sovereign, the Lithuanian princess Elena Glinskaya, fulfills Vasily's hopes and bears him the long-awaited son, later known throughout the world as Ivan IV the Terrible.

Family happiness, however, does not last: Vasily III dies from a sorcerer's curse.

The frail widow and her infant heir to the throne are targeted for removal from power by rebellious boyars and the late sovereign's brothers. Military might, bribery and the most effective weapon of the time, dark forces, are all brought into play.

The defence of the throne is taken up by Elena's favourite, the powerful nobleman and famous commander Ivan Fyodorovich Ovchina-Telepnev-Obolensky.

The struggle for the Kremlin goes on with varying success.
