1944. The Red Army is liberating Ukraine. The Hitlerites are trying with all their might to hold on to the seized territory. To lure the advancing Soviet units into a trap, the Germans set up false positions on one sector of the front. The enemy's plan is uncovered by foot reconnaissance. But its report contradicts the aerial photographs. The front's operations department insists there is no ambush and that the advance can go ahead. SMERSH Captain Timofey Romantsev is instructed to clear up the situation. He concludes that someone in the front headquarters is deliberately distorting the state of affairs. The very first suspect is found shot in a forest near the front line. Romantsev understands that he is on the right track and the traitor is somewhere close...
